Remote Learning Days Guide

Remote Learning Begins on Wednesday, April 1, 2020

The Illinois State Board of Education has designated the remainder of the time during school closures as opportunities for remote instruction. The primary purpose of remote instruction is to provide you an opportunity to engage with peers, teachers, counselors, and specialists in a supportive environment while providing you every opportunity to improve your academic standing.

Remote Learning During Closure

  • Students will have opportunities to connect with peers (see schedule). 
  • Students will have opportunities to improve their academic standing.
  • Students in dual credit courses will continue to focus on the course outcomes and complete assigned work to earn college credit. 
  • Students in Advanced Placement will continue to prepare for exams by the College Board.

Student Expectations - Stay Engaged

  • Check the weekly assignments by 8am on Tuesday.
  • Submit attendance survey in Infinite Campus Monday-Friday by 1pm on each day.
  • Be available for your classes when they meet according to the “Remote Learning Days Class Schedule.” If you are unavailable, reach out to your teacher and let them know.   
  • Meet deadlines for assignments.
  • Collaborate with classmates.
  • Be proactive and take control of your learning.
  • Communicate with your teachers regularly. 
  • Seek help when needed and communicate.

Grading Practices During Remote Learning Days

  • Assignment & Test Grades
      • To promote continued learning and growth, students will receive assignments and assessments that are aligned with course goals and targets.  
      • Teachers will provide feedback as well as score assignments and assessments during Remote Learning Days. Assignments and tests that improve a student’s grade in a class will be counted and used as an opportunity for a student to raise their grade.
  • Final Semester Grades
      • Students’ grades cannot negatively impact a student’s academic standing during Remote Learning Days.  
      • Because of this, no student can receive a “Semester Final Grade” lower than their grade on Friday, March 13, 2020 - the last day of attendance before Act of God Days and Remote Learning Days. 
      • If a student has a Final Semester Grade of “F” during this Remote Learning period, it will be replaced with an “Incomplete.”

Video Conferencing Guidance

During this time that schools are closed, there are many benefits to video conferencing to stay connected with classmates and engage in instructional activities. However, there are some essential requirements for students to keep in mind.

  • Use WIFI. Unless you have an unlimited cellular data plan, find a WIFI connection. 
  • Camera: You choose when and if you want your camera on or off. Ensure you are dressed appropriately for school and you are aware of anything in the background that your class could see when the video is on. 
  • Your class may be recorded. Not everyone in your class can join during the scheduled time and the teacher may record the session to post for students to access at a later time. Please ask your teacher if your specific class will be recorded
  • Mute yourself when not speaking. Remember that during both check-ins and instructional time you are in the presence of teachers and classmates. Whatever is happening behind you can be heard. To help eliminate background noise and improve the sound of your voice, try using earphones.
  • Be flexible and understanding. 
  • Be kind and observant. We all handle stress differently. Stay connected with friends and let an adult know if you or a peer is in need. 
  • All the rules apply. When you are in class, you are in school. Behavior during remote instruction on discussion boards or video conferencing should reflect the same expectations as in the classroom.
