West Engineering Competing at State

Four Niles West engineering students have qualified to present their project at the 2015 Illinois Engineering Design Competition held May 27 at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). This is a statewide competition for the students are enrolled in Project Lead The Way’s (PLTW) Engineering Design and Development (EDD) course. The competition is designed to recognize and reward outstanding student project and highlight the importance of engineering design and problem solving in STEM education.

West Scientists Win More Than 50 Awards at State

Niles West High School students competed at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition held recently at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and received 32 Gold awards, 12 IJAS Special Awards, and eight Best in Category awards. Twenty-nine science students from the STEM Inquiry and Research course (SIRs), Physics and RIOT Club qualified for the state competition. The highest level projects can win a Gold award. Those that are deemed the highest achieving in each category can win a “Best in Category” award.


Student Wins Metra Poster Contest


Niles West freshman Elaine Tran placed first among all 9th graders in Metra’s 2015 Safety Poster and Essay Contest. First place poster and essay contest winners receive an IPad and will be featured in Metra’s 2016 safety calendar, on weekend tickets, and on the Metra website. A People’s Choice Award winner will be selected via voting on Metra’s website. Voting will be available through midnight Friday, May 29.

West Student Earns Second in Niles Library Poetry Contest


Congratulations to Niles West student Jessica Uy, the second place winner in the Niles Public Library Poetry annual Teens Poetry Contest. A ceremony was held on May 16 to honor the winners, and offer them the opportunity to read their poems. Uy’s poem will be on display in the Teen Underground at the Niles Public Library, 6960 Oakton Street, Niles.

Boys Gymnastics are 2015 Sectional Champions

Congratulations to the Niles West Boys Gymnastics team - 2015 Illinois Sectional Champs! First sectional championship since 1975 with Bart Conner! The boys vaulted past the competion (yes, pun intended) and will compete at the state championships later this week (5/15-16) at Hinsdale Central for the second year in a row!

Auto Club Drives Away with Race at Great Lakes Dragaway



Congratulations to the Niles West Auto Club that took first, second and third place at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI on May 1. Edi Qendro won first place, followed by Tyler Milbrandt in second, and Matt Danielak in third. Niles West automotive technology instructor Timothy Richmond is the Auto Club sponsor.


NWN Named Top Online Publication by NISPA



Niles West News (NWN) received the Golden Eagle award and was honored as the top online publication by the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association (NISPA) at their annual conference held on April 24. NWN received 225 out of 230 points, the top score. NWN also took home several Blue Ribbons, the top prize in individual categories.
