West's Rigby to Join Famed Golden Knights in Tandem Jump

What are you doing on June 11? Niles West’s Assistant Principal Mark Rigby will be at about 12,000 to 13,500 altitude above the ground, joining the U.S. Army’s legendary Golden Knights Parachute Team in a tandem jump out of an aircraft over Fort Knox, KY.

NWN Editor Named to All-State Journalism Team

Niles West High School senior Gabby Abesamis was selected as a member of the 2014 Illinois Journalism Education Association (IJEA) All-State Journalism Team. Abesamis, an editor-in-chief for Niles West News (NWN), represents the best in high school journalism this year. Members of the All-State Team are considered “most valuable players” on their publications, due to their leadership, energy, dedication and expertise.

Illinois journalism students in grades 9 to 12 are eligible to be nominated by their advisers, who must be members of IJEA.

West Student Wins Essay Contest

Niles West High School senior Jennifer Nguyen was the winner of the 2014 High School Essay Contest sponsored by the National Forum on Judicial Accountability with Drum Majors for Truth. Nguyen spent almost three months interviewing whistleblowers, and writing and revising her essay “Truth Tellers.” The general topic was "Whistleblowing:  an invaluable public service, a detriment to society, or, for the most part, much ado about nothing?" All essays were submitted anonymously to a panel of judges for review, scoring per a prescribed scale, and optional comments.

West Artists Work on Murals

Niles West High School students Kaelie Seatter and Nicole Nienow participated in the Flat Iron Artists’ fifth annual “Now You See It and Now You Don’t” art exhibit to celebrate spring. The interior walls of the Flat Iron Building at 1579 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago were transformed into a lively canvas, displaying a continuous flow of linear art through the building. The mural, which the students collaborated on with Chicago artists, is on display until June 6, when the murals will vanish and be covered with white paint.
