What is Financial Aid?

  • Financial Aid is the combination of resources (loan, work-study, or grants) which supplement what the family is expected to contribute to meet the costs of a college education.  Financial need is determined by subtracting the mandated family contribution from the cost of the education.
  • Beginning January 1, 2012 students and families may complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • To prepare to complete the FAFSA families can:

      1.  Obtain a parent and student PIN number

      2.  Organize the documents you need to complete the FAFSA

      3.  Read "The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid" to avoid making common FAFSA errors

      4. Check the individual College/University dates for Financial Aid filing. Each school may have different

          deadlines for FAFSA status.
