State Diving Champ Royzen Honored by D219 Board
STATE DIVING CHAMP ROYZEN HONORED BY D219 BOARD
The Niles Township High School District 219 Board of Education at its March 14 meeting congratulated Niles North’s first-ever Illinois State Boys Diving Champion. Senior Max Royzen won the top title at the IHSA Boys Swimming and Diving Finals on February 24 and 25.
Royzen shared some comments at the meeting:
“I have been diving for about eight years. I started out diving at a Northwestern-based Chicago dive club but over the years have trained at UIC. I have had a lot of competitive experience in diving, doing local, state, national, and even international diving events.
“Being part of a great team like the Niles North swim and dive team was a lot of fun. It was a great four years and I formed a lot of great memories. It was so amazing to watch everyone work so hard and grow the way they did. The whole team saw their work pay off tremendously at the end of the season. In particular, I have been dreaming of a state title ever since my freshman year. I could imagine this moment as a senior finally having all the hard work pay off and winning the state title. This makes it all the more special. I was so in the zone the whole competition that I don't think I heard anything but the sprayers under the boards.
“On my last dive, I remember thinking, Oh my God, I could actually be a state champion! When I hit my last dive and I realized I was a state champ, it was an awesome moment. It is when you realize that all of your hard work was worth it.
“First and foremost I would like to thank my parents for supporting me through my long journey to this point. I would also like to thank all of my coaches for helping me achieve this goal, in particular, coach Joe Wilson, my diving coach, and Seth Orlove, the head coach of our program. And I would like to thank District 219 for having excellent programs to allow myself and so many others to achieve their goals.”
